Aging in Place: Creative Community Options for the Second Half of Life
Fred Lanphear
This is an interactive workshop that looks at how communities can intentionally embrace and celebrate the second half of life. It focuses on acknowledging and creatively preparing and caring for the inevitable aging process that happens to us all. It will include: 1) Celebrating the transitions of aging and providing significant roles of engagement, 2) Exploring ways and the extent to which communities can provide care for aging members, 3) Preparing for and participation in final transitions. Some specific topics include realities and fears of getting older, co-care and outside care, and staying healthy through community.
Fred Lanphear has lived in various forms of intentional community for over 35 years. He is a cofounder of Songaia Cohousing near Seattle where he currently lives and where he was initiated as an Elder in 2006. Fred was a cofounder of NW Intentional Communities Association (NICA) and serves on its Board of Directors. He also serves on the Fellowship for Intentional Community (FIC) Board of Directors.

2nd Half of Life Options
We are very interested in 2nd Half of Life Options. We at Florida Central Cohousing are (as we speak) collecting our documents and hope to approach Investors for an "Elder Rich" Cohousing Community this week. We are hoping to build the place where we want to Age in Place. Please allow us to be in discussion on this topic.

A conference round up is in the works
We'll do our best to let you know how it went. The July issue of Cohousing Magazine will feature a summary of the conference, a fair number of photos, a short video or two of attendees' reactions plus links to the longer descriptions of the initiatives and other developments announced at the conference. Stay tuned!
elder rich cohousing
While at the National Coho Conference last week, I learned that in a multigenerational coho community, "the dollars go to the families", and the "focus is on the children". It seems that space, money, amenities... may be allocated disproportionately towards the families, even with a fair number of seniors in the community. This is the reason that, for some elders, elder only cohousing is a desirable option.
I am curious how space and funding would be budgetted in an elder-rich community. For example, in an urban cohousing community, with limited space and money, how would limited resources be allocated if say, there were 6 young children, 2 teens, and 20 elders? Obviously, each community makes these decisions for itself but has your community considered this issue of allocation of resources?
