    A glance at a detailed map of U.S. cohousing communities would show that most of us are living in areas of relatively high property values: on the coasts, in college towns or on the outskirts of high-tech growth centers. That’s one reason why making cohousing affordable to the widest possible number of people has been of intense interest to prospective community members throughout the history of the cohousing movement.

    “You are literally creating a new culture,” sociologist and market researcher Paul H. Ray, Ph.D., declared in his keynote speech to the attentive crowd gathered in Boulder, CO, for the Cohousing Association of the United States’ biennial National Cohousing Conference.

  • Chris ScottHanson, author of The Cohousing Handbook, together with his wife Kelly, provides consulting and “streamlined development” partnership participation for communities across the U.S. Chris now specializes in the startup phase of development, including land acquisition, feasibility, budgeting, scheduling and assembling the professional team. Numerous resources are available free on their website, including a Membership and Outreach Manual.
